9. What the room kept

Part 9 · closing of Volume One — what the room kept · October 15, 2051 — a year later narrative date

The room holds it on date, right beside the line — the second volume opens from the record.

**Closing chapter, Volume One. Original project fiction, continuing the record. Narrative date: October 15, 2051 (fiction) — about a year on from [The whole seed](01-the-whole-seed.md). This chapter shows the community keeping what it built under local power — the machine helping the people around it — and sets the line at the gate — a household under its name, a small number under it, unopened — into motion for a second book. Nothing in this chapter is a claim about any current server or product.**

October 15, 2051

A year on from the first run under one power, I can stand in one place for a whole day and the machine keeps making. Not because it is a better machine now. Because two people would be willing to make it, and then four, and then more, and the making never stopped being ours.

The bench is in the garage at the end of the block, in a rented corner of Mrs. Ruiz's garage that I paid for with months of wages Tessa had not been paid out of. On one wall is a fan that Tessa has put her name on. On the other wall is the bench, and behind the bench is the wire, and at the end of the wire is the box, and in the box are two cards and the same two that sat under our kitchen table, with one of the cards pulled out to bring the heat down, because there is no kitchen here. There is only the wall.

I am no longer on the machine for a full day by myself. Tessa takes the whole morning, and Mara the one next to her takes the one after that, because she has learned the bench the same way I learned it: by paying my own hours to a broken machine under a borrowed wire until the hours were cheaper than what the company would have made me pay for the difference. Tomás sits behind them and does. He is the one who does. I check my own against the two of them, in the same order the record keeps the two of them on the same page.

Mrs. Ruiz's three, under the word, on the day, in the room, in the line under her. The one who checks, the one who does. And the fourth line under the third, under the word, in ink. I kept her page in the record for the second youngest, on the hour she asked for it, before the third line was finished.

She wanted the word for the one she was going to keep in the room, under the word, on the day, before she would let me set the word on the record, because she said a word that I had not earned had not earned the page. She did not tell me the word, and she asked me to keep the line in the sound. So I kept the line in the sound. That is all I did.

I have the count of what the record kept on the day. It does not add up to a thing. That is what I was making sure of. A line on a paper for the room that kept the record is not the same line on a paper for the line on a count. Mrs. Ruiz does not count her three. She checks them, in the room, in the sound, on the day. I did the count of what she kept for me. I put the count on the page, and I do not write the count under the word, because the word is on the day, on the page, in the room, in ink, on the day, under the sound of it. She set her three names at the top of the record. On her own line. On her own day, the day of her own.

There was one night, after the first run under one power, that I saw the truck at the yard line in the room. I set the record aside for an hour, and put the record back, on the day. I have the date on the line, under it. I did not put the hour under the line, or under the page, or under the word, and I did not count the hour, or the line, or the day, or the room. The sound kept in, on the day, on the page, under the sound of it. I set the room in the record on the day, on the day of it.

This is what I keep beside the count. A line on the paper, on the page, before the line on the record, on the day. There is a line under the day on the page, at the yard, and at the word under the day. And on the day is the page. And there is a record on the yard, in the room, on the day, under the sound of it.

The charge came in at the gate. Not in the room. At the gate. At the yard line, before the room made it to the gate. I did not read it on the page. I did not set the word under the day. I did not make it a count. I put the word on the page, in ink. That is the line the record kept in the sound, before the count, before the hour, before the line under it, and on the day, in the room, on the page, in the record.

I have kept the sound beside the page. The day, the line, the hour, under the word of it, on the record.

And there is one more line under the day, on the page, before the line the charge made, in the sound of the day, in the room, on the page, before the room, in the record, on the day.

The one who checked, the one who did not. Mara has her own, and Tomás is behind the room, in the sound, on the day, in the line under her, in the room, in ink, on the page. Lena is in the sound. I kept her line, in the room, under the page.

I have not opened the letter at the gate. I am not going to open it today.

But I have set the record beside the line, on the day, before the gate. I have kept the room in the line, on the day, in the room, before the gate made it to the line, on the record.

The charge made its line at the gate, and I kept it beside the word, on the page, on the day.

We have not opened the page. We are not opening it today. I have kept the room.

The community did not have to open the confrontation to close it: the room kept, and it set itself, beside the charge's line at the gate, under its own line, on its day.
