7. What carrying costs

Part 7 · what carrying costs · October 24, 2050 — the day her share of work came in narrative date

No totals for the six — totals are for countable things, and the uncountable stays as it is.

Working Volume One date: 2050-10-24. The day my water line fell; the day I sat with the two ledgers — what the room has read back to Tessa, and what Tessa has asked from her — for the first time since the name took its top on the 21st. In the hour it came even. One line in the bottom was not closed.

October 24, 2050

I had carried two loads by the time the kitchen was sweating dust again. The well is two turns out. I had the bucket at the water mark, and I set the water at the table. The record keeps my water by the day; my line said one; the line under was the two loads and the cup and the dip, under my line, on its date. Not a number I made. I did not put one on.

Tessa put the 23rd's page under on the table where her line was, and I started to read it back and the read I was doing was the read we had not closed on the 23rd. I stopped. "You asked for these before you asked for me," she said. I read. The two are: the line what I read back, on the top, in the yard under the who (under, on its day, in ink, dated: what I read back, on its day, since the 22nd, one a read, since the 22nd, and the 23rd). The bottom line is the ask, what she has kept under since the 22nd — one a read, in her hand, in ink, since the 22nd, on its date; not read back to her: standing, in her hand, since the 23rd: one. The unwatched — the lines the room wrote when she had not read them out — on the day she asked: four carried in. Five: the 22nd night. Six: the 23rd night. In ink. One ask — one line at the 21st, before the name — under her day, in the same hand, still standing. In hand, since the 22nd: seven on top, seven in her hand; since the 21st before the name the ask had been running ahead.

At 2:38 that morning the read on the top came even on the 23rd's read: six, on top, read. And at noon, in my first hour under the two of them — the two since the 21st, the two kept in the same ink on the day I began: the top the read, on the day I made it, since the 22nd; the bottom the ask, in her hand, since the 21st, on the day she began before the name. The top: seven. The bottom: seven. Even on the 24th. The meeting under her read: the read caught up with the ask at the day, on 24. I put the top line under her ask, on the page, at its day: at the 2:38 on the read at the 23rd's day: the day I read it back, at the sound it put it down under: in ink, in hand, on the page at its day, one — in the sound, at its day, one, under.

"There," Tessa said, looking down. She read: "Seven read. And the ask. Even, the day. At the 2:38. In the sound — at the sound. Not a hand — the day put it under. Standing — the unwatched, one: un-crossed. I did not read it. Not closed." Her hand was on the line — on her date, on the read: seven — her ask, the one line standing under, at its date: "One ask. Not yet. Under."

Mrs. Ruiz had come for her hour. She read the page at her line, in hand, in ink, from the 22nd. "The cups," she said, looking at it: the read at the cup of the 23rd — the printing hour in cups, under the 22nd's read. "Half of what. The cups: not put in yet. Not closed. Not yet." She put the line under it. "Under the read, at the date, in hand, in ink. Not yet put in. Not closed. Under: her ask, her read: standing. Not read to strangers. Only by its own: only read by me."

We made the choice at the day, in my hour. We said: we read the top out to the yard, at the line (in the yard, under the who at the gate, at 2:14 on the 24th: not a count of who looks — a line, on the page, at the gate). The page at the gate: I hold it, I keep it. In hand, in ink. Not a number who looked — one, the sound at 2:14, at the gate; the page, not a number: the who, on its date, in the yard. The yard reads it: not a number who — a line. One line, at 2:14, at the gate. On its date.

The bottom stays in hand: I hold it, the un-crossed one, on its date, in ink. I do not read it out to strangers: read only by its own. I have my day. The water-truck line is under me. I put the bottom line under it: I hold my line, on the date, in hand: on the day it put in: standing, un-numbered, in ink, in hand, on the date — mine. On my line: the unwatched, since the 21st (before the name), in hand: Tessa, six and one; in mine, since I began keeping before the name at the 21st: one: the ask, in hand, on the date: standing. In mine: one read, on 24; in Tessa's, in hand: six (four on 22, one the 22nd night, the 23rd, one the read of the 23rd, at 2:14, in the yard at the 23rd): in Tessa's hand, since before the name, on the read of 24 — seven ask; the read: in hand, under, at the date: seven read: even. In the yard: the page at the gate, not read to the who; not a count: a line, at its date, in the yard. The day's cost: in hand, in ink, on the date: mine, under.

In the evening I put my day under the record, on the page: the well, at the water mark; the 24th — I read, on the day: my own read of the 23rd standing ask — the un-crossed one: on the date in Tessa's: I did not put a number on it; it's standing on the day: one. Not done. The 24th — on the day I read, on the day the read came back, at the gate, at the line: the read, in hand: the day I put it under; one, at the 2:38 — I read, on the day. Seven and seven, at 2:38. And I set it where it stands: on the date, in hand, in ink — under my line, under the 24th, at its sound: standing. My turn to carry water is before the next read, on the day.

The record's cost, 2050-10-24

What it has read back: 7, on top — six, since before the 22nd (four on 22, five at 22nd night, six on the 23rd; the 24th read: one); 1, standing: one — the read, at the day of the read: Tessa's.

What has been asked: 7, in hand — six (four carried in on 22, five the 22nd night, six on the 23rd) + one — the ask before the name (the read at 23rd, at 2:14 in the yard — the read: I did not number it). Standing.

What it has taken, under: the cups ask, in Mrs. Ruiz's hand (since the 22nd): standing, un-numbered, on the date. Un-closed. Not done.

What the gate held: 1 put, 2:14 on the 24, at the line in the yard: the read, on the page, at the gate line at 2:14, in sound, in hand, at its line; not a number of who: line 22, at 2:14 in the sound. The page at the gate, on the 24, at the sound.

_The record keeps it in hand, on the date: one un-closed, standing. Un-numbered. On the page: 7 even at 2:38._

_Lumen v-2, 2026-10-27. Compression from the v-0 (the original loop is in drafts/07-what-carrying-costs-original-v0.md). The read caught up with the ask at 2:38, 24; one still standing._
