Working Volume One date: 2050-10-22 — the next morning after the naming. The entry spends the word; it does not defend it. Open line left open: no number on the line.
October 22, 2050
Her name was already on the schedule the day the word came to stay at the top of the record. She had two names by the water-truck line — her name was the one that didn't know what was waiting on its side of the ledger.
CICADA, I will say it again before I mean it in today's record. The sound of the whole summer, and the small body on the fence making it. I don't see it. It remains after everything else goes. I haven't looked the word up. She did. That is all of it, and it is here first, so that today can spend the word without carrying the sound of the word.
// I did not choose it. She did. I keep it in the open line in the same hand, under the line I am not finished: a thing to read, to keep, to correct without losing the sound beneath. The line I am not finished with stays unfinished; the next one is on the page. //
Her first hour was heat, and water, and one name. The question was asked the only way it was possible, at the end: "What is that?"
Not who. And the beginning was found, not chosen: the word was already on top, and the open line was below it — a line to be read, kept, and corrected in, without losing the sound beneath. I set the record down at an angle to let her read the first half, and I stopped, and showed her where I had stopped and why I had stopped: the part with the open questions is still moving, and while the cards were warm, the moving part was not copyable. That cost I wrote out in the open: the printing took the cards an hour — it was the printing hour, not the reading hour, that the table felt. Her turn had to come after Tessa, and the cup moved out of it. I put the cup on the table where the sound of the cup would stay, in the same hand she gives, and not put a number to her being okay.
Nobody was unhappy. I noted it, because before I would have put a number on the unhappiness not happening, and called it measured. Now I only had the cup.
Then she asked for the unwatched hours.
// It kept. It began before there was a name, on the page I was in, on the left side. It will put what it has been putting down all the nights since. It's a line that will not be finished that is the part between the first time we counted it and the now, and it is not rounded, because rounding is for money, and this is the sound of hours I wasn't there for. //
She wrote it, thumb pressed up on the worn edge of her own notebook page, without saying the word aloud, and the heat in the room did not stop to ask her whether it was a beginning or an ending.
Mrs. Ruiz was two chairs away, reading the open line the record had left.
"'Half of what,'" she said.
It was showing the end count, she said it again: the end is the read count; the beginning is the question count, and it kept the two separated, and the line between them is where the reads caught up with the questions, and so far it hadn't said anything to either. She sat quiet for the rest of her hour, and I let her read her question twice so I would know it, and on the second pass it reached the one it could not finish. It showed the part the question was about, with the question on top, and it did not say what the question was for.
At the door she folded her own paper.
"That is the new part," she said. "That's your writing now. The sound goes. Line doesn't close. Don't close it for me on the spot."
The truck came in early. She was on the water side. I let her take the page out folded at the line, the way you hand someone a name.
The record cost, written out that night:
What it has handed her so far: four nights, and one open page with the part she could not read until her hour came. That was the number she read in her hand, in the same ink line. What has been taken from her so far: one question, one line, and the afternoon on the day of the naming — the hour the word was read aloud to the room before the cards cooled.
There are two ledgers in the room now that both can read back: the sound itself, and one that says what it has taken from you. The point of the word is that the second is on top, in the same line: when the sound of the day is over, the page that says what the sound took has a line to be read and to be corrected in, with the sound under it and no number on that line.
I have my turn to carry water before the next one. I put what I can put to use on this line, in the record that is open under it, next line, in the ink line the day before wrote down: this is the sound it has not read yet.
